Tethys the goddess

The Himalayas were formed by the Tethys sea.

The continents were first divided into Gondwana land in the south and Laurasia in the north. The Indo-Australian plate then broke off from Gondwana land and the Indian plate crashed into Gondwana land and pushed the geosyncline Tethys sea up, forming the Himalayas.

According to Greek mythology, Tethys is a sea goddess and is the wife of Oceanus. The Tethys sea was named after her by Eduard Seuss.
